Verizon Wireless announced that its fourth generation long term evolution network is notably quicker than the 3G networks that are presented by U.S. carriers. The company is testing its LTE network in Boston and Seattle and discovered that it was able to offer standard real-world download speeds connecting 5-12Mbps and upload speeds in the area of 2-5Mbps. LTE is capable of providing peak download speeds between 40 and 50 Mbps and upload speeds between 20 and 25Mbps. Verizon Wireless says its on track to set out its 4G network to 25-30 markets.

As mentioned by Verizon on its forums, subscribers can now use their Verizon Wireless Android powered Motorola DROID or the Windows Mobile powered HTC Imagio as a remote to control their FiOS set-top box for their FiOS TV. The software allows you to control channels, pause/rewind/face forward, set parental controls, record TV shows, and transfer photos from your phone to your television. If a phone call comes through, your TV will be automatically muted. The application for the phone is available in each app store and you can be set up using your WiFi network at home. Future handsets will also be attuned with the software.

Verizon Wireless has topped the J.D. Power and Associates’ 2010 Wireless Call Quality Ratings List Volume 1, though U.S. Cellular gained higher score the North Central U.S. region. According to the survey, Verizon Wireless had the best call quality, as rated by 24,345 people across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Southwest, and Western regions of the United States. It’s the eleventh consecutive time that Verizon Wireless was had the best call quality in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, according to J.D. Power and Associates.

Verizon, together with and Skype, has announced a “Skype Mobile” function that will be available to Verizon Wireless customers. The app is scheduled to be launched on nine various phones, which include the Storm, Storm 2, Curve 8330, Curve 8530, Tour, and 8830. It will also run on the Motorola DROID, the HTC DROID ERIS, and the Motorola DEVOUR. Calls made using the free Skype Mobile will run over Verizon Wireless’ voice network although a data plan is still necessary for smartphones on Verizon Wireless.

Just so those who are in need would know, Verizon has just announced that its wire line and wireless customers can go on with their free calls to Haiti without long distance fees for two more weeks. The original cutoff was in January 31, 2010. Now, the free calls were moved until February 14th.
