Sony Ericsson posted a net loss of $40 million for this quarter. Its quarterly net income after taxes and restructuring charges was $167 million, a year-over-year increase of $20 million. Sony Ericsson sold 500,000 more units quarter-over-quarter for a total of 14.6 million unit sales in the fourth quarter. Units shipped in 2009 totaled 51.1 million, a decrease from the 96.6 million units shipped in 2008. Sydbank analyst Morten Imsgard, said “Overall sales of mobile phones are disappointing and it is pointing toward a weaker global market in the fourth quarter than was expected by the market. On the positive side we see that the new phones are well received by the customers and [Sony Ericsson] is really selling more high-end phones, raising the average sales price quite a bit–a lot more than I had expected.”
