Dan Woolley, was caught under a pile of rubble when the Haiti earthquake hit. With the use of a first-aid app in his iPhone, he managed to create a tourniquet for his injured leg and bandage for his head. The instruction on the first-aid app also warned him against falling asleep after head trauma, so the phone was also used as an alarm which is set to go off every 20 minutes. He survived until rescue teams got him out after 65 hours and is reunited with his family.

Amazon.com proclaimed that it will enter into an agreement with Macmillan to sell electronic versions of its books even at prices it considers too high. The retailer had pulled Macmillan books Saturday, including e-books for Amazon’s Kindle e-reader, in a disparity over the publisher’s new pricing model for e-books. Amazon wants to tamp down prices as it faces more competitors. But Macmillan and other publishers have criticized Amazon for charging just $9.99 for best-selling e-books on its Kindle e-reader, a price publishers say is too low and could hurt sales of higher-priced hardcovers.

Cellphone sales rose 10% year over year and 11.3% last quarter according to two research firms, Strategy Analytics and IDC. Strategy Analytics said global handset shipments reached 324 million units last quarter, which represented a 10% gain over the same quarter in 2008. Nokia, Samsung, and LG held the top spots in global market share during the quarter, with Samsung moving stealthily up on Nokia’s 39.8% market share. Strategy Analytics found that Samsung shipped 69 million phones globally in Q4, a company record that was up 31% over the year before quarter. Apple shipped 8.7 million iPhones during the fourth quarter and grabbed a 2.7% hold of the global phone market. Motorola holds 3.7% share of the global phone market.

Qualcomm reported quarterly revenues of $2.67 billion, a 6-percent increase year-over-year. The company reported $1.27 billion in operating cash flow, which was a 63-percent decrease year-over-year. It attributed the drop in cash flows to license and settlement agreements with Nokia. Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, chairman and CEO of Qualcomm said “I am very encouraged by customer traction around Qualcomm technologies, including recent device announcements based on our industry-leading Snapdragon chipset and increased adoption of our Brew Mobile Platform operating system”.

Nokia announced that its net sales of EUR $12 billion (U.S. $16.79 billion) for the 4th quarter were down by 5.3 percent year-over-year. Nokia’s CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, said “We grew our market share in smartphones in the fourth quarter, driven by the successful launch of new touch and QWERTY models. Our performance in smartphones, combined with continuing success in the emerging markets, helped us increase sales in our Devices & Services unit, both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year.”
