Originally, incoming messages have been free of charge in Canada. However, both Bell and Telus perceive a huge source of revenue from the rising SMS usage. The two Canadian carriers are about to launch a charge for incoming SMS messages this August. Excluded in the price increase though are those subscribers who are already enrolled to a monthly plan.

Bell is set to start charging on August 8, and Telus on August 24 wherein each incoming messages will be charged CA$0.15. As a result, the Canadian carriers are facing a class action lawsuit in Quebec.
