Nokia has recently made an offer to buy 52% of Symbian, an association which develops software for their phones. After acquiring this share, Nokia plans to involve Sony Ericsson, Motorola and NTT DoCoMo in the establishment of a foundation. LG, Samsung and Vodafone, among others, are also joining the said foundation. The three different versions of the Symbian OS will be amalgamated into one, royalty-free, open platform.
Collaborations by the members will integrate the UIQ and MOAP(S) technology and assets into one common UI framework accessible to all Foundation members under a royalty-free license.
The Foundation aims to develop an open source mobile software surpassing all others by using the reputable base of Symbian and Nokia to strengthen itself.
