Samsung has filed a patent application for an unusual new cellphone display, records show. Instead of relying on a conventional LCD or even OLED panel, the Samsung display actually relies on projection, something that has fallen out of favor in other realms.

The principal advantage of projection is that while most uniform panels are only cut in predetermined sizes, a projection display can utilize any screen measurements its developer wants. Samsung further notes that in the future, it may be possible to create a holographic display, enabling new interfaces.
