Google has quietly released the second major version of their popular Maps for Mobile application. Google Maps for Mobile 2.0 makes significant changes to major portions of the application, and adds significant new functionality.
The updated version sports an improved interface, better Bluetooth GPS support, as well as a new My Location feature. My Location will use all available data to locate the user as best as possible, based on their device (and carrier) support. For example, using tower and network positioning, Google Maps will attempt to launch with a map view of the area you are in. This works without any GPS support, based on IP-address and other location data. The application also makes improvements to panning, zooming, and searching.
This new version is not entirely bug-free however, for example, the location awareness feature will often accidentally load the wrong location on the first try, and then reload to the correct position. Google Maps for Mobile is available from google.com/gmm on your Java, Windows Mobile, or Palm OS handset. Google adds on their web site that the initial version 2.0 is a beta, however, devices do not have the option to download the older (non-beta) version.

Cellphone users could soon tell when their handset is running low on juice or laden with new messages simply by reaching into their bag or pocket and giving it a quick shake.
A new system uses a phone’s speaker and vibrator to make a device feel and sound like it contains liquid when it is running out of power. The same technique can be used to indicate when new messages have arrived, by simulating the sense of balls rattling around inside a box.
