Deutsche Telekom, the parent company of T-Mobile USA has announced its intention to purchase regional carrier SunCom for $1.6 billion.

SunCom is a regional carrier with a GSM network providing coverage in the southeastern United States and was the only other provider that sold the Danger Hiptop (nee T-Mobile SideKick) in the U.S.

The deal is expected to close in early 2008. The deal will also include the assumption of debt nearly totaling $800 million.
